WordPress, Joomla and templates they make web development so easy!! … so why bother using a web developer?

In recent years we have seen a meteoric rise in the use of open source CMS with the 3 main parties vying for popularity being WordPress, Joomla and Drupal. The improvements in CMS has allowed the lesser experienced web developer to build a site with relative ease, using a WYSIWYG editor to create the HTML that was once written by Dreamweaver or hand-coded in notepad, textpad or other text editors. There is no end of tutorials available on the internet that will guide you through the steps needed to set up a CMS and from there it can be fairly simple to build a run of the mill text and image website. At the time of writing this I have no working knowledge of Drupal so it would be wrong of me to offer any critique on its qualities which leaves WordPress and Joomla open for discussion.

Whether you choose WordPress or Joomla to build your site there isn’t a great deal of difference between how you set up the website in the first place. You

  • download a zip file, unpack and upload to your server
  • create a database on your server for the site to use
  • navigate to your website and follow onscreen step by step instructions that configure your database to the files on the server.

After following the steps you will be presented with a website that contains no content of your own but will give you a layout and impression of what your website is going to look like, you can then choose from a number of templates that are available on the internet to give your website a different design and layout. Using the CMS administration you can then create your menu, add pages to link to the menu and add meaningful content to those pages…and hey presto you have a working website! Following these steps will give you a working website that looks neat and tidy…however you will always, without reasonable exception want to make further changes to your website, why is that?

Ultimately when you first decided to build a website to advertise your company or sell a product or event you envisaged it would have the look and feel of your company as it is at the moment. The colours and branding that has stood you in good stead so far would need to be carried through to your website to give it a familiarity to your current and new customers. This would not be achieved by plumping for a template that has probably been used tens of hundreds of times over. By choosing to use a template you are guaranteeing that there is at least 1 other website on the internet that looks like yours. It’s a little ironic that if you choose the best looking or most popular template then you are also choosing to have your website look and act like a greater majority of sites on the internet.

If you are considering developing a website then it is for the above reasons that you should really look into having a bespoke website designed, rather than creating a run of mill, generic template website.

A website designer can create a live marketing tool that will present your company to the internet community as a professional outfit who are in touch with the changes in technology. They will work with you to create a design that is exactly like the marketing product that you hoped for in the first place. There can be no underestimating of how important this is for your company as the world has become more internet savvy and the current generation of consumers will often refer to a companies’ website before employing their services.

From there the designer will pass your designs onto a developer who can create a pixel perfect website to represent your company. The website will be dynamic, cross browser compliant and scalable. It will contain all the bells and whistles that you have seen on other websites and wanted to bring to your own. Special effects where images can be zoomed in on, or animated buttons will be used to add a subtle class to the finished article.

There is more that can be done to enhance your website in the form of SEO and this can all be undertaken by choosing to use the services of an accomplished, flexible and dynamic website development company. I will cover more of the benefits of SEO and how it’s benefits in future articles, however if you wish to talk more then don’t hesitate to contact us at IDML on 0800 80 30 826.
